So you want to read my story?
It is said I was born reading. But if I’m to be completely honest, this is said by my mother, who defends this improbable brag with photographic evidence (see said photo on the page).
I chalk the picture up to unbelievable timing, but it makes a fabulous origin story for a life-long lover of the written word.
Fast-forward to my first journalism job as an editorial assistant: following publication of my debut story, a colleague delivered a high compliment, stating, “I enjoyed that piece. You actually made that topic sound interesting.”
Intending no offense to the subject of that long-ago story, the surprise in her voice filled my writer ego with joy and gave me a new mission for every assignment since – keep it interesting.
Although not a revolutionary concept, we have all come across writing so dull the eyes glaze over as the mind searches for the quickest exit. Information can, and should, be shared in ways that keep a reader reading, a viewer viewing, and a consumer clicking.
I have made it my specialty to determine what will grab an audience’s attention and how to craft that into a message that resonates, whether it’s copy for a website, a lede for an article or blog, a theme for a campaign, or simply the right words to land a product on a search page and a consumer in the buy box. I can even find a story in a spreadsheet.
The evidence to support this is less questionable than a photo and comes in the form of awards, conversions, and likes that span a career of 20+ years.
